Daphne Does Derby

Daphne is a muslim-rollergirl-maniac. She's sort of funny.

Poem by Roisin Roulette of Birmingham Blitz Dames and All Ireland Roller Derby fame.

My bones ache in the cold; and forty bouts
Have left their marks on me.
New tactics come and go; I can adapt
Skate either fast or slow.
My chosen clothing functions to conceal
The strapping and the padding underneath
Which hold my joints in place
Meanwhile my face
Reveals my will to battle for the win.
I am a derby skater so I skate
Counterclockwise swooping ducking low
Within the pack or jamming. You can’t see
Anaemia diabetes HRT.
I will be here next season and the next
I won’t be pregnant and won’t move away.
While I can still hit 30 laps in five*
And make the travel team, I’m here to stay.

*I can do WAY more than 30 btw

My favourite part is how the footnote rhymes.
