The Post Derby Nap
Today was a newbie practice. “Don’t worry if you feel tired. I used to come back from practice and fall asleep,” I said as I guided the new girls through some basic skills. I suppose that might have given them the idea that I don’t do it anymore.
Preparation is key to the post-derby nap, otherwise I keep remembering things I should have done and I can’t relax.
As soon as I get home, I take out my mouthguard out of my mouth and rinse it out. I used to have a mouthguard container but I took it to practice once and it disappeared. Probably to the same place my skate tool went. Therefore I store my mouthguard in my mouth. I should advertise for Protech.
Then I find food. Often orange juice. Sometimes peanut butter. You can’t have a nap if you haven’t eaten anything.
Then comes the post-derby shower which I have already gushed about. It rules. Straight up. If you don’t have the shower, you can’t expect your nap to reach it’s full potential. Plus it’s kind of gross.
After the shower comes the putting on of pajamas. Dressing gown is optional. Fluffy slippers are mandatory. I do this even when the practice was in the middle of the day. It’s necessary.
Back to check on my kit bag. I give it a half hearted airing. I’m lucky because I don’t sweat much and I have layers between my skin and my pads, so they don’t get damp. I rinse my mouthguard with some mouthwash.
After this I’m read for the well deserved nap. Thirty minutes minimum. All warm from the shower, all tired from derby. Muscles feel nice and tingly. The Post Derby nap is perfection.
Here is a chart to illustrate.

Setting an alarm is wise though. Otherwise the post-derby nap may be a significant factor in post-derby insomnia.
having two toddlers...look after afterwards.lol.
