Following my failphiphany (fail+epiphany. it’s a work in progress) last week I am totally in love with putting on the brakes when I’m in a wall. IT’S SO SIMPLE. Just a case of adjusting the angle of your skate and pushing down in a sort of triangle. I’m working on core strength to ensure I have the power to keep my balance and adjust quickly and also because core strength is about 80% of roller derby.
Honestly, just realising my problem and focusing on making one little change at practice has improved my game SO MUCH. The best part is that it’s a clear advancement of skill. I couldn’t brake effectively before, and it made my positional blocking weaker. Now I can. The box is ticked and I feel like 100% better a rollergirl than before.
